Hand-Engraved Intaglio
_______________________________________________________
Woodcut is a relief printmaking technique, in which all areas that are not to retain ink are carved away. The block is inked, covered with paper, and transferred onto the paper through spoon rubbing or putting through a press. Each print must be made individually, repeating the process until the desired number of prints are made. I will then often hand-paint each woodcut print with watercolour.
Wood Engraving is a relief printmaking technique. Areas are engraved with a special tool called a burin. There are different sizes for engraving purposes, as well as tools for texture. The block is then inked and pressed with paper. Each print must be made individually.

Intaglio is a form of printmaking in which a plate - typically copper, zinc, or plastic - is engraved with special tools burins, as used in wood engraving above. With this type of engraving, the deeper an area is engraved, the more ink it will hold, resulting in more profound variations. With Intaglio, a plate must be engraved, then inked, wiped, topped with paper, and put through an etching press. The press creates pressure which transfers the image from the plate to the paper. Each print must go through the same process each time it is made.
Printmaking is an exciting art form. It involves many different techniques, tools, and processes - which all include transferring an inked image onto paper. Sometimes the ink will rest on top of a block, known as relief printing, and other times the ink will rest in the markings of an engraved or etched block, known as Intaglio.
The types of printmaking that I focus primarily on are Woodcut, Hand-Engraved Intaglio, and Wood Engraving, as well as a bit of linoleum and reduction printmaking.
